"Who would hold a beauty contest in the middle of this crisis" It's crazy! But it's actually a way of surviving." Ayşe Toprak (Director)
Mr Gay Syria is a film about waiting, hoping and loving.
Mr. Gay Syria follows two gay Syrian refugees who are trying to rebuild their lives. Twenty-four-year-old Husein is working as a barber in Istanbul as he waits for possible placement somewhere in Europe. Married with a young daughter, he is living a double life between his conservative family and his gay identity. Mahmoud is the founder of Syria's LGBTI movement and is a refugee in Berlin. What brings them together is a dream: to participate in an international beauty contest, Mr. Gay World, as an escape from their trapped lives and an answer to their invisibility. It is not, however, going to be easy, and they know it. Mr Gay Syria is a film about waiting, hoping and loving.
