"In case of doubt, do not act." (From the film)
How hard could it be to renonunce faith? The preposterous struggle of a Spanish man with the Catholic Church.
If a human figure were to be created out of the contrast set by the churches in Madrid and the city's cosmopolitan atmosphere, his name would be Gonzalo Tamayo. In love with his cousin, constantly running errands for his father and stuck with only one credit to finish his degree in philosophy, Gonzalo's life is a mess. In an attempt to evade the impositions of the people around him, he decides to alter his self-history starting from renouncing his family-imposed faith and deleting his records from the books of the Catholic Church. He is yet unaware of the rollercoaster ride that awaits him. Co-written by Alvaro Ogalla who performs the lead role comfortably in his acting debut and the director Federico Veiroj, The Apostate is a brilliant, absurd comedy with implications of Buñuel's surrealism.
